Key checks

Check whether one heater or every heater is affected.

If all heaters are cold, a common off-peak supply or switching fault becomes more likely.

Do not assume a smart-meter change is irrelevant; confirm the off-peak switched output arrangement.

If only one heater is affected, its local circuit, isolator, controls, thermostat or elements may be at fault.

When to call an engineer

If the problem involves fixed wiring, high-current heating equipment, repeated tripping, unvented hot water or uncertainty about the supply arrangement, testing is safer and usually faster than swapping parts.

If every storage heater is cold

A fault common to every heater points us towards something shared: the off-peak supply, meter switching, contactor, off-peak consumer unit or a widespread circuit issue. It is unlikely that all heater elements failed at exactly the same time.

If only one heater is cold

When the other heaters charge normally, attention moves to that heater's local circuit, fused connection, internal controls, thermal cut-outs and elements. This simple split prevents unnecessary work on the metering side.

When the fault can only be tested overnight

Some tariff-controlled outputs are live only during the supplier's configured off-peak window. Where no test override is available, part of the diagnosis may need confirmation when the off-peak supply is actually energised.
